The NextGen Precision Health Discovery Series provides learning opportunities for èßäappSystem faculty and staff across disciplines, the statewide community and our other partners to learn about the scope of precision health research and identify potential collaborative opportunities. The series consists of monthly lectures geared toward a broad multidisciplinary audience so all can participate and appreciate the spectrum of precision health efforts.

"How Diet and Exercise Influence Cardiometabolic Health and Microbiome Interactions"
Speaker: Jaapna Dhillon, PhD, Assistant Professor, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, University of èßäapp
Date: Tuesday, July 11, 2023, noon-1 p.m.
Location: Tom and Linda Atkins Family Seminar Room, Roy Blunt NextGen Precision Health building
Description
In this seminar, Dr. Dhillon discusses ongoing research investigating the effects of dietary interventions (including almonds and personalized Mediterranean-style diets) and exercise interventions (incorporating resistance training) on cardiometabolic health, the gut microbiome and host-microbiome interactions. This research aims to optimize health by considering the complex interplay between diet, exercise and the gut microbiome. By understanding these connections, personalized strategies can be developed to improve cardiometabolic health and overall wellness for individuals.
èßäapp the Speaker
Dr. Dhillon is an assistant professor in nutrition and exercise physiology in the Division of Food, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at the University of èßäapp. She has expertise in cardiometabolic health, gut microbiome and omics techniques in the context of clinical nutrition interventions and pre-ingestive controls of nutrition. Her work has contributed novel data on the beneficial effects of functional foods such as almonds on visceral adiposity and cognitive function in adults with overweight and obesity. More recently, her work has characterized the benefits of chronic almond consumption on blood glucose regulation, gut microbiome and metabolism assessed via metabolomics and transcriptomics (gene expression) techniques. Her current research program is focused on using systems biology approaches to understand the effects of dietary patterns and exercise on human health and host-microbiome interactions and in alleviating health disparities. She currently holds operating grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Almond Board of California and the University of èßäapp’s Genomics Technology Core.
