Budget

The House Budget Committee heard recommendations from the Subcommittee’s on Wednesday. During this hearing, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Appropriations on Education explains the recommendations and changes made during markup the previous week. The Budget Committee has the opportunity to ask questions regarding those changes and to express their support or opposition to recommended changes at that time. Over the next week, the Budget Chair will take into consideration those recommendations and will release his proposed budget late next week.

Committees

SB 259, dealing with Title IX changes, passed out of Senate Education Committee 6-2.

SB 265, sponsored by Senator Tony Luetkemeyer, which would give a vote to the student representative on the BOC was heard in the Senate Education Committee on Tuesday. The bill received overwhelming support from witnesses and committee members. Senator Luetkemeyer said this would give the student representative the 9thvoting position on the BOC and would give students an opportunity to have valuable input on matters before the board. 

Senate Transportation Committee met Thursday morning to hear SB 121, sponsored by Rep. Eric Burlison. This bill repeals provisions that prohibited someone with a valid CCW permit from carrying a concealed weapon at any public higher education institution building. COPHE testified in opposition on behalf of all four year public institutions and mentioned that campus’s already have armed security on campus. No witnesses testified in support, while eleven witnesses testified in opposition.
