Carole Read
Chair of National Science Foundation's CAREER program Coordinating Committee

Dr. Read is a program officer in the Chemical, Environmental, Bioengineering, and Transport Systems (CBET) division of the directorate for Engineering of NSF. She has been at NSF for about 8 years (5 in CBET). Dr. Read has been recently named chair of NSF’s CAREER program Coordinating Committee across the Foundation. Prior to CBET, Dr. Read was a program officer in the Engineering Research Center Program of the Division of Engineering Education and Centers (EEC).

Prior to NSF, Dr. Read served as a technology development manager in the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells program (now the Fuel Cell Technologies Office). In this program, she managed applied research and development in hydrogen storage technologies for transportation applications, ran the education program, managed market transformation projects, and led the U.S. participation in the International Energy Agency’s Hydrogen Implementing Agreement on the Executive Committee of that research collaboration. Dr. Read also has industrial experience at then Arthur D. Little, Cambridge MA in chemical and energy industry consulting with expertise in technology assessment. Dr. Read also has experience in the petrochemical industry in then ARCO Chemical in process development.

Lisa Spain
Director, Immunobiology of Type 1 Diabetes and Autoimmune Endocrine Diseases Program

Lisa Spain, Ph.D., has been in public service at NIDDK since 2004. She serves as director of the Immunobiology of Type 1 Diabetes and Autoimmune Endocrine Diseases Program. She is also the Project Scientist for Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet—an international consortium for the conducting of clinical trials for the prevention and reversal of type 1 diabetes. She also directs the division’s mentored career development programs.
