Recommended Guidelines for Cellular Telephone Usage While Driving on University Business

Operating a motor vehicle requires the driver’s constant attention. Anything that distracts the operator of a motor vehicle dramatically increases the risk of an accident. Use of cellular telephones or other wireless devices (calls, texting or other functions such as email, reading or writing messages, etc) while driving during University business travel is discouraged. Keep in mind that cell phone use rules may change from State to State and drivers are expected to observe the cell phone use laws of the jurisdiction. When use is necessary, pull off the road and stop in a safe place to operate the phone or device. Let your wireless network's voicemail pick up your calls when it's inconvenient or unsafe to pull over or ask your passenger to operate the device on your behalf.

Tips for Cells Phones

  • Safe driving is your first priority. Always buckle up, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road and follow all traffic laws. Keep in mind that cell phone use rules may change from State to State and drivers are expected to observe the cell phone use laws of the jurisdiction.
  • Do not use in gas stations, or when fueling lawn movers, boats, etc. Mobile phones can ignite fuel or fumes. Mobile phones that light up when switched on or when they ring release enough energy to provide a spark for ignition.
  • Remember: Safe driving is your TOP PRIORITY! Use the cellular phone only you’ve pulled off the road safely.
