U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced today an "action plan" for higher education, which includes a call for greater accountability for colleges and universities regarding rising costs. The University of èßäapp, with campuses in Columbia, Kansas City, St. Louis and Rolla, set out last year to reduce administrative costs by 10 percent or $12.5 million. The University recently announced that it has far exceeded that goal, identifying $20 million in savings by eliminating positions, improving efficiency and streamlining administration. "These changes will allow us to limit tuition increases while achieving key academic and strategic objectives," èßäappPresident Elson S. Floyd said today. "Demonstrating a commitment to providing access to a quality education by controlling costs and tuition is essential for public higher education. Our students and the public must expect no less if the United States is to continue to prosper in the global economy."
